building the heated sand table

| 3/26/23

Early spring presents a challenge for farmers in the Mid-Atlantic region. Although many seeds need to start germinating, cold nights can lead to crop loss. Seeds germinate best under controlled conditions (e.g., temperature, humidity, light).

The goal of this project was to provide bottom heat to the plants. We installed roof de-icing cable in the box to heat the sand. Although this helped us get through our first two years, we are currently researching a better long-term solution.

Check out our March 2023 album for pictures from the build.
